About This Course

We warmly welcome you to the module "Professional Ethics and Responsibility". This module will help you to shape your personal values in the journey to achieving your professional goals as a responsible engineer

The course "Professional Ethics & Responsibility" will run throughout the full semester in the academic year 2022/2023 and 2023/2024, as per the planning of the Master Program "Energizing Green Economy for Sustainable Society" (https://mece.managewe.com/index.php). The course consists of two themes: (1) "Ethics in Technology" from an overall perspective and (2) "Responsible Research & Innovation", both separated in two lessons. The content is intended to (1) inspire the learners towards reflections upon the society we live within, (2) give an overview of the ethical theories and methods people use and have utilized, and (3) to instill a valuable, societal and systematic reflexivity for learners to make their future ethical considerations sound.

The course is built primarily on the "Flipped Classroom" concept in which the learners are engaged in self-learning through the various modules, including to answer the formative and summative assessments. In the process the learners are requested to discuss pre-determined (and other) questions between themselves to enhance the peer-learning perspective.

Each lesson is separated into a number of "Content" and "Assessment" Modules. Using the "Flipped Classroom" perspective the learners can work on this at their own speed and interest, while having the synchronous discussions as the main final outcome.

The assessment of the lessons will be performed via the (1) compulsory formative assessment, (2) voluntary peer discussions (one question after each Content Module), (3) compulsory hand-in assignments at the end of various module, (4) compulsory peer review of the formative assessment.

The learner can easily follow the progress throughout the whole course via the "time-banner" above the "Getting started" section below. If a module has been started a small green circle appears in the top left corner. Once it has been completed a "tick" mark is shown inside the circle. For this progress to be properly registered in the system the learner needs to be logged into the "Learnify" repository. At the end of the complete course there will also be a formal assignment. This can only be accessed by persons who have completed all the lessons as per above.

The course contains the following 4 lessons:

• Lesson 1: Ethical perspectives in technology
• Lesson 2: Ethical theories in technology

• Lesson 3: Responsibility and research
• Lesson 4: Responsibility and society

The course consists of four content modules with a small assignment per module, two support modules (Q&A and library), and two final assignments. The first assignment is writing a position paper or literature review about ethics and responsibility in energy transitions or technologies. The second assignment is a peer review of two other position papers or literature reviews written by other students.

What follows is the structure of the course:

• Submit after two weeks the 'Article plan'. This is a 2-A4 plan describing the: Title, Short introduction, Your research question, Literature search plan, and at least 10 references you want to include
• Article Submission week: Submit after 7 weeks your Article to Jeroen Vonk by mail (j.h.j.vonk@utwente.nl)
• Article Review week: Conduct a review of two fellow student papers based on our evaluation form.
• Revise your own article based on the two student reviews.
• Final Submission week: Submit your revised article again to Jeroen Vonk for the paper grading procedure.
• Article grading by two teachers based on the following grading criteria.
In case of an 'unsufficient' (below 5.5) you will get an additional article revise assignment.
